This image was taken through a Vixen FL102S refracting telescope “4 inches/102mm diameter) with a Canon 40D DSLR camera at prime focus. The guiding was using a Skywatcher ST80 telescope, mounted side by side with the Vixen, and a DMK21 camera using the PHD guiding software.
Although this is probably peoples favourite object to image, it is quite difficult due to the wide range in brightness.
To capture the outer dim regions 17 x 5 minute exposures were taken together with 21 x 2 minute
and 27 x 30s exposures for the brighter regions. The three batches of exposures were stacked in Deep Sky Stacker and the resulting three images combined in Photoshop using mask frames.
