The Whirlpool Galaxy with SN 2011dh
This supernova designated 2011 dh was discovered on or around 31st May 2011 and is indicated on the above image with the yellow lines. All the stars in the picture are within our own Milky Way galaxy and the supernova, which is 15 million light years away appears as bright as some of those stars. Just imagine how bright it would be if it were within our own galaxy.
This image was taken  in the early hours of 8 June 2011 with a Vixen FL102S refractor with a Canon 40D at prime focus. It consists of 15 x 5 minute subs stacked in Deep Sky Stacker and processed in Photoshop CS2.
